The 90,000-square-foot expansion of the former University Center provided for a two-story Barnes and Noble bookstore and new offices for the Student Union administration and student government. Phase I also included a casual dining area, a small theater, a retail corridor and a new Gathering Pavilion. A formal landscaped pedestrian mall with fountain and seating areas contributed to the outdoor space between the expanded Student Union and the Library.
